2010 NYMannings Scholarship - $66,000 Awarded to date

NYMannings Scholarship program was initiated in 2004 by Peter Lau and Anne Kong, proprietors of Confucius/ Mannings Pharmacy. Their idea was give back to the community through sponsorships of youth in education and to propagate the seeds of CARE.  To date, a total sum of $66,000 has been awarded to extraordinary high school students based on community involvements, financial needs and academic performance.

2010 NY Mannings Scholarship Award Ceremony took place on 7/31/2010 at Lin Shing Association on 49 Mott St.  This is the 7th year of the scholarship program.  3 Recipients were chosen from 78 applicants. Each Recipient will receive $4,000 in total, $1000 to be awarded each year during their 4 years of College.

2010 Scholars:
XiaoQuan Ma - Brooklyn Technical High School, to attend St. John’s University majoring in Pharmacy
ChaoNan Lin - Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School, to attend New York University for a Pre-medicine program
ChunWan Tse - Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day HS, to attend Hamilton College majoring in economics.

Confucius / Mannings Pharmacy believe that CARING will make the world a better place.  Everything starts at home and we hope by awarding the students today, we are setting a good example.  In addition to the monetary award for the students, we keep in touch with the scholars during their college career.  The Confucius/ Mannings CARING spirit flows: WE WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE and do things that are good and positive.

In the spirit of CARE, this year award ceremony carried 2 purposes: recognition of the scholars as well as experience sharing by the young scholars.  This latter new idea was spearheaded by Victor Chen (2008 scholar) who started this planning with Anne since last summer.  Peter Chen (2004 scholar) and Rebecca Chan (2005 scholar), now young professionals working at Barclay Bank and JP Morgan Chase respectively, supported the idea.

After a brief recognition award ceremony with picture taking; our students and families gathered in a round circle and shared their experiences.  The atmosphere was casual yet informative. Participants shared their experience on internships, majors, career paths and scholarship’s leads.  Parents also share their thoughts on their experiences with their children during their college years.  Candid questions on choosing majors, careers and schools were discussed.

Summer Students from CPC program, Oxford intern and staff’s children were invited to attend.  Students exchanged their contact information and hopefully will be able to network and help each other.
